My coworker was forced to work the day her mother died, and the boss told her to “power through it”

I’m a PSW in a long term care facility. I have another job so I’m only part time here, and tonight when my coworker showed up to relieve me from my shift she was an absolute mess. Her mother had died earlier that day and she tried to call in to her overnight shift. Our boss just told her she has to “power through it because we don’t have anyone else to work tonight”. I sent her home and offered to stay because I’d want someone to do the same for me, but I have zero respect for my boss and even less respect for this whole system which I didn’t think was possible. This job is exhausting, emotionally draining and physically demanding. I sent her home and offered to stay because I’d want someone to do the same for me, but I have zero respect for my boss and even less respect for this whole system which I didn’t think was possible. Anyway I’m halfway through an 18 hour shift now, struggling to stay awake and just needed to vent. I love the residents that we support here with all my heart, but damn.
