My Employer is threatening to garnish my commission because some of my customer’s haven’t returned item’s they requested RMA’s for. Is this legal?

I live in the US and work for a small company. My pay is shit but I do get 25% commission on the profit of all of my sales. Today I received an email that every existing RMA that hasn't been returned will be docked out of our future commission. So we run credit checks on every customer and if they have good credit we can set them up with Net 30 terms. This way we don't get hit with the credit card fee's and the customer has more time to pay. Every now and they a customer will buy an item that doesn't work for their application, so they request an RMA. Our company has already paid the manufacturer, and our company is out thousands of dollars until their RMA get's processed. I'm now being told that any unpaid items from the customer will come out of my future…

I'm now being told that any unpaid items from the customer will come out of my future commission. Like I said my actual pay is shit. And I typically get a few thousand dollars in commission each month. I have about $8,000 in unpaid RMA's out their which means I won't be making commission for 2 or 3 months if my customer doesn't pay. I'm not sure I can finically take that. Is this legal? I'm in the US and I believe wage garnishment can only be used for Student loans, and child support. Any legal advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
