Lurker, never posted before. I work in a franchise chain of well known adult boutiques. I do my job well, and customers are typically happy in their experiences with me. However, there's a rule in place that when customers are in the store, we can't be at the register. Even if we've spoken to them and they don't need help, we are expected to go near the customers and “adjust things” near them as a form of loss prevention. I don't make a habit of doing this, it makes people nervous and is generally annoying behavior. Today it was reiterated to us that if we are caught at the register while customers are in the store, we might lose our jobs because things are being stolen. I have no intention of following customers around. They can tell, and it's an asshole thing to do that would likely ruin their shopping experience. I just think it's hilarious that this is considered acceptable.
