My first boss lied about why I got a raise

In 2013 I was working in the restaurant of a small theatre for $7.25/h. At this point in time I genuinely believed working hard would be enough to succeed. So I did everything. Constantly scrubbing the floors, taking extra shifts, coming in early for prep etc. After a few months my boss excitedly told me what a wonderful job I’d been doing, and that I’ve earned myself a $1 raise. Wow! It really does pay off! I found out later the state minimum wage went up by $1
