My friend’s boss made her attend billionaire’s party to push her beliefs onto her staff

I have a friend who works in LA for a wealthy business person. Her CEO asked her (and I'm assuming other staff) to attend a campaign party for LA-mayor candidate Rick Caruso even though there was no direct relevance to their work or industry. Is her boss allowed to do that? It would be one thing if it was a business development opportunity (although that would still be questionable) but she wanted her staff to listen to him speak and be encouraged to vote (?). I would feel so uncomfortable if my boss asked me to attend an event that has nothing to do with my job role or our actual company's goals/business development, especially if it's a political event for someone who goes against ALL of my personal beliefs and values.
