I’m a “server assistant” at a pretty big company. Basically I’m supposed to help the servers out but I do their job for them (I greet the tables, take drink orders, clean and reset all tables, run food and drinks – the only thing I don’t do is take the main order) as well as all the side duties, and only receiving literally 1.5% of the tips. 1.5%.
I get scheduled for something like 5-9 and then stay until past midnight and they don’t let me leave. I think on one hand it’s normal for waitstaff to stay later but a) I am not the “actual server” and b) from all my other server friends, I was told it’s not normal to stay 3+ hours later.
My managers are quite difficult and it seems like everyone is incredibly stressed 24/7. I have been treated unkindly and told rude things. It’s honestly exhausting, both physically and mentally.
I cannot leave my job yet because I have not heard back from other places I have applied to.
Just thought I would share, since this kind of ties into this subreddit and my job being a “scam”. I would also appreciate some Reddit words of wisdom lol.
