Hey all, so I work as a crematory operator for SCI. I’ve been working at this location under this manager for almost a year but I’ve been cremating for years.
But on to the matter at hand, I found out yesterday from another employee that my manager told her how much I make per hour (21.50 an hour) and then proceeded to complain that I am severely overpaid and that I don’t do anything and anyone could do my job. But what really makes me angry is the fact she’s admitted to me that she has no idea what my job entails and what I do. The machine I operate is extremely old and I have to preform a lot of maintenance on it just to keep it running so I’m constantly climbing on top of the machine adjusting wires that have come loose or replacing sparkplugs or adjusting the gas I also have to stay in front of the machine the whole time just to reset it when it shuts off because it’s so old and malfunctioning so often. But even with all of these issues they refuse to get a new machine or even have it properly repaired, it all falls on me to keep things going so if anything I feel I deserve more pay, if I left there would be no one left in this building that knows how to run the machine and they would have to contract with an outside funeral home for 1200 a cremation and the funeral home can’t afford that and will go under, cremations are 90% of the income for this location so without me here the funeral home would definitely go under and shut down. I’m planning on quitting as soon as I have something else lined up and I’m also looking into the legality of her disclosing my pay to multiple other employees.
TLDR: my manager is disclosing my pay to other employees and I’m leaving and taking the funeral home down with me.
