Was just scrolling through the sub feeling some righteous joy at the stories of people telling their bosses to “get f***ed”, and felt the urge to share mine.
6 years ago I was working for a company and made an internal move to a new role, definitely a promotion though. Did the role for a year and a half and was doing a good job. I found out I was on significantly less than the rest of the team. I spoke with my boss and MD about market rates and what the rest of the team was on and got told that it would be reviewed and next year.
A few months go past and I get an offer from a ex colleague who is at another company, I take the job offer and resign. MD asks for a meeting and explains that I’m really valued and they want me to stay.
MD – “ it’s not all about money, what else is important to you, do you want to work in a different team or do something else ?”
Me – “ it is about money, if somebody offered me 200k to sweep the streets I’d take it “
MD – “okay, what will it take for you to stay?”
Me – “I told you that 6 months ago and you didn’t listen then, if you want me to stay why don’t you make me an offer, how much do you want me to stay?”
MD – “that’s not how it works”
Me – “okay, I’m leaving then”
Probably not the most exciting story but the look on his face when I told him to make me an offer will stay with me forever.
