Tl;dr: My Son-in-law's father stood up for his employees and refused to sell his dental practice to a schmuck.
My son-law's father, Dr. P, has been a dentist in Northeast Philly for over 35 years. He's of the age to retire and found a buyer (Dr. Schmuck). Dr, P has 4 dental assistance (DA) that have been with him for over 15 years (one of which one has been there still the start of the practice). They all have four weeks vacation and two weeks sick leave. They all cover each other's shifts with very little drama.
They were getting to the final round of paper work when Dr. Schmuck noticed (even though it had been documented since day one) that Dr. P's dental assistants all had four weeks of vacation. He is was infuriated and said that when he buys the company, he would reduce their vacation to two weeks because that's what all dental offices have. Dr. P says that's inappropriate because of the DAs tenure and commitment to the patients. Dr. P further said that he's going to stop negotiations right there and inform them and get their reaction.
Dr. P talked to all the DAs and told them what was happening. He suggested they quit and he'd find them new spots with some of his friends. They all submitted a letter of resignation dated and conditioned on the sale of the business to Dr. Schmuck.
Dr. Schmuck was outraged by the letter and said “I wouldn't buy the practice if I have to start with all new DAs” and demanded Dr. P to convince them to rethink the resignation. Dr. P said “Nope. I'll take your comment as you want to back out of the sale. Here is your deposit and have a nice life.”
He's found a new interested buyer who will honor the DAs current terms.
