My sister in law (SIL) and her partner (S) work for a contract company here in Canada. At the moment, their job is to install cables for television and internet in apartment/condo complexes in their city. One tenant of a building they work at approached them to let them know she had asbestos in the floor and it was more than likely in the walls as well. The tenant had proof of the asbestos, she owned her unit and had contracted a company to redo her floors which is when she found out. My SIL and S then refused to complete work on the building until the asbestos was addressed, as it could be dangerous to their health and the health of the tenants to drill holes in the wall and disturb the stuff. Instead of approaching the company who hired them for work, my SIL's boss instead placed them on unpaid leave for causing trouble.
It is important to note that my SIL previously stirred up some trouble when she found out the new male hires at the company were making more than she and her partner, despite both of them working there for years. The boss fired the new hires and gave my SIL and her partner a tiny raise to drop the matter.
None of this seems legal, and I want to help them as best that I can. Has anyone experienced something similar?
