My supervisor denied my request for Bereavement leave after my friend died

I can’t post a text screenshot due to the rules of the sub, but long story short, my friend died in a car accident due to a drunk driver last week and I took 2 days off to spend with my S/O and grieve. Just today my supervisor finally got back to me and told me that my time off request couldn’t be approved because “Bereavement can actually onlv be used for death of an immediate family member.” I don’t even know what to say to this, and quite frankly it’s really upsetting me. I don’t even know what to say to this, and quite frankly it’s really upsetting me. I know it’s not her decision and at the end of the day it’s a larger issue with company policy, but this is ridiculous. As far as I’m concerned, any death closely related to your life should be eligible, regardless of relation. I’m closer with some friends than I am with family, and I guarantee that I’ll need more time to cope when some friends die over some of my family members. That’s just the way it is. And I shouldn’t have to lie about the situation just so I can make sure I get paid for this.

This is mostly me venting, but if anyone has any constructive advice that’s not “just quit”, I’d appreciate it.
