I wanted to share an interaction I had with my dad this weekend.
For context, my dad is close to retirement age (we'll see if he can actually retire) and he is a CNC machinist in a small town. He is very conservative politically and we do not agree on most things in that arena.
I saw my folks this weekend and my dad and I were talking. He excitedly asked me if I heard what happened at the Dollar General in the town where he works. I said I didn't and he told me their entire staff walked out due to overwork and under payment! I said “GOOD!” and raised a fist in solidarity and was laughing along with him. He explained that they got all the shipments from the backorders during the pandemic, and now there is a ton of inventory at the store. So much that it is just stacked on pallets in the aisles because they don't have enough workers! And the workers they do have aren't paid enough, so they just left. Amazing story. Fuck Dollar General as well.
It feels good that I can still connect with my dad on worker's rights, because it is a thing we can ALL get on board with. I hope there are others who have been able to connect in this was, although I know a lot of our parents really love defending billionaires.
