My wife and I moved across the country for her new job…….She was just laid off after less than a year

This isn't a post bitching about her getting laid off. Rather, it's bitching about how specialized most jobs are to the point where you need to be in a specific location to be in the field (Think Hollywood being the epicenter of film production, so if you want to be in the movie or TV industry you need to be in LA). The opportunity was too good to pass up, so we uprooted ourselves and moved 3,000 miles to a city we had never been to before. The company was expanding and hiring a ton of new people. But like all businesses, they run quarter-to-quarter, not looking at the big picture. Something happened internally in the C-suite and her department was liquidated. We think they sold the company and didn't tell anyone yet. We moved here with the intention of her having this position for 5+ years. Only problem is…

Only problem is there are no other companies in her field in this specific location. We'd have to move 6 hours away if she wants to stay in her field….Or she can spend money to go back to school and get a degree in something else that can be more universal.

It also doesn't help that she reached a senior position and received an amazing salary and tons of benefits. If she switches careers she may need to start at the bottom, making half of her salary and possibly not having any benefits.

We moved away from our friends and family for this. She gave it her all and was still let go. Now we're stuck in a lease and have no friends or support network out here. Even worse, we were planning to have a baby soon before we get too old (Mid-30s now)…..Now that plan's out the window for the foreseeable future.
