This was years ago, but I still laugh when I think about it.
When I graduated high-school, I didn’t know what I wanted to go to school for so I decided to get some experience working for a few years and make a decision once I figured out what I liked. I worked a few jobs as a technician for phone carriers like sprint, at&t etc. Then one day this company reaches out to me about a job opening in their IT department. It paid very well, especially for an 19 year old so I agreed to interview. I interviewed and the boss offered me a job on the spot because he liked me so much. I accepted because it seemed like a great opportunity and he calls in the HR lady to start the hiring process. He left, and the HR lady came in and asked me a few basic questions, had me fill out some forms and then she leaves the room for a few moments. She comes back with this thing that looks like a sponge attached to a stick. She tells me it’s a saliva drug test and she wants to just get it out the way. I bite down and we sit awkwardly in silence until the sponge soaks up enough spit. (gross, I know). She “tests” it on the spot and tells me, my drug test came back positive for amphetamines. I explain to her that I’m on epilepsy medication that has amphetamines in them. So she says “No worries, we’ll just have you do a urine test with a lab to confirm that.” I don’t know why they didn’t just do that in the first place but I digress. I did the urine test with the lab the next day. I get a phone call from the HR lady a few days later saying “I got your results and they came back clean, but we need to double check to really make sure you’re not on any drugs. Please send us a copy of your medical records that shows the medications you’re currently taking, and we’re going to have you do a Hair follicle drug test to double check”. I was a kid at the time, so I didn’t have any real working experience. so I though this might just be normal. I did the hair test, sent my medical records that showed my medications. A few days later I get a call from the HR lady saying “ Your drug test cleared and we received your records but we’re uncomfortable hiring you because you failed your initial drug test. We’re rescinding your offer.” As a kid, I was devastated, now I realized I dodged a bullet.
