I've been working in a management role for this company since the end of last year. I've learned over the past ten months that I was basically suckered into this job – every promise, every guarantee has been left unmet. I was only really hired to fill a quota to get my department back up and running after covid, and upon learning this, I decided I want out. So here's the problem – I received a sign-in bonus and a moving allowance for this job. The paperwork states that if my employment is terminated by either myself or the company, I must repay the entirety of both sums of money to the company. It's a total of $10,500 – which was taxed – and after taxes I received a little over $6,000. Is it legal for the company to go after the entire amount, even though I've fulfilled nearly 80% of the year? I truly don't think I can finish the rest of the year here. My mental and physical health have suffered because of this place and I need to get out ASAP.
