Not for me, but someone close to me.
I watch her bring work home, essentially working overtime but with no pay. She has stayed overnight at the workplace in order to send emails. The business has had some struggle since the pandemic. Her manager, who is new to the building, has her covering what she’s supposed to be doing, on top of the workload my relative already has, essentially working for two. It’s currently 1:30 am and she still awake, working. Has to go to work at 8, which is an hour commute. Said manager has also created a toxic work environment, including favouritism, shifting the blame, and shovelling all her responsibilities onto my relative. The owner of the business is aware of this manager’s attitude, but has bigger concerns that he sees it as petty drama not worth getting involved in. So long as work gets done, he doesn’t care how. Employees have already reported the manager, and those she favours, to HR but nothing has been done. If my relative has any push back, the manager spins a narrative of insubordination. Is there anything to be done? This has gone on for too long, and I feel helpless. She’s the breadwinner of the house, and while I help with bills and groceries, we cannot afford it if my relative quits and cannot find another job.
