I was working as a sous chef in an upscale market/bistro, it was soul crushing .. The work was awful, the owner of the market knew nothing about running a restaurant they had like 10 managers, and 4 kitchen people, I shit you not. When we were busy these managers who have never worked in a kitchen would just stand there. It was fucking awful. Positives – It was a bistro inside of an Italian Market so they were closed at 7, Also I was paid $22 an hour, which was a step up from my gig before that at $17. Although I had a long as fuck commute, it was still worth.
I see a place that is hiring full time, pay is advertised $15-$20 and is literally walking distance from my house, working better hours. I applied and got the job. It was a brand new place he he was opening. In the interview I told him what I was making and his words were “are you willing to take a $2 pay cut?” And I said yes.
I quit my job and start up at this new place, dude knows nothing about restaurants. It's him and I and he is legit going to the grocery store buying store brand products and serving them (I worked at 3 star restaurant in the past) And this place is dead. Dead as fuck. I knew he was bleeding money, but I showed up on time and did my work and stood around a lot on my phone. Two weeks passes.. it's payday.. he hands me $300 cash. I call him out on it and he says he'll get the rest to me tomorrow. The next day, he calls me and says they're closing for awhile since business is slow. Can't pay me either. I quit a stable job for this scumbag and now I'm forced to go to the labor board to get compensated. Also, can't pay my bills. People are awesome.
