I work at one of those higher end discount stores and this weekend was the annual labor day sale. I was scheduled to work Friday thru Monday, but Friday was horrendous. Earlier this summer, we were told the company was cutting hours because they do that every year around that time. Additionally, more than half of my coworkers are teens and started school again a week or two ago. So instead of hiring people or scheduling additional people prior to the sale, they decided to schedule like they do M-Th for the big sale. You can probably imagine how insane it was without enough people there. They also decided to bring in 2 new hires for their first days on Friday. I only worked with one of them and he knew this was all bullshit and just hung out texting all day and I don't blame him. 3/4 through my shift both of the direct managers for my team had left, and the new guy came to find me and tells me that one of the managers told him to shadow me. I'll be the first to say that I am not a teacher, I do not want to manage, and there was quite literally no time. Later, two of my coworkers were helping a customer find a shirt and the manager for the cashiers (ie not our manager) gets on the walkie to say “pretty sure we don't pay you to stand around and talk”. This manager is the least helpful person I've encountered, she complains about everything, says she doesn't know how to do the things that my team is responsible for, and then does shit anyway that's always wrong and we have to take time to fix. When I left before close, there were hundreds of clothing items to sort before they could be put away because half the teens I work with sit in the back on their phones for most of their shifts.
I'm one of their hardest workers (I know I shouldn't be, but I can't turn it off) and dealing with this complete cluster fuck for not even enough to buy my own groceries is just fucked.
Saturday morning before my shift, I got an update to my schedule app, and they had deleted my shift for Sunday. I've told them twice before that they have to talk to me before they change my existing schedule. I knew Saturday was going to be worse than Friday, so I turned off my phone for the entirety of my shift and enjoyed myself.
I'm going back in for my shift today (Monday) and no work is going to be done until I have a thorough discussion with the store manager.
If anyone wants updates, lmk. And remember, they need us, we don't need them.
