The preschool I work at has a rule where if you don't work the day before or the day after a holiday break, you don't get paid for the break. Well, last week was spring break, and my coworker had a family emergency today so she couldn't come in for her 8-5 shift. Which means she isn't going to get paid for last week at all.
She's a single mom of two and she doesn't get any money from the baby daddy. She's always helping out with whatever the front needs her to do, and she's a very strong and reliable employee. I am so mad on her behalf for this. I can't believe they would be so heartless and not give her an exception. It's not like she's coming back from a vacation in the Bahamas; I literally saw her in the office this morning trying to explain the issue. I don't have any details about the emergency, but she shouldn't have to try to argue her case so hard. Shit happens and people can't come in to work, and sometimes that happens the day before or after a break. They shouldn't be punished for missing one day by losing a whole week of pay.
I have a lot of problems with how this preschool is run but this rule is especially shitty.
Also, another coworker almost had the same thing happen to her Thanksgiving break because her JURY DUTY was scheduled the day before the break started. She managed to argue her case (since she'd GO TO JAIL if she didn't show up for jury duty) and got her holiday pay, but jfc. It's so fucked up.
