My husband works for a copper mine. They have a collective bargain for hourly employees, and about 3 years ago the company decided the employees no longer would accrue sick time as state law requires, and that there would be no sick time because they are an exception to the law. The employees get paid time off but are only allowed to use the PTO if they give the 5 days notice. So the pandemic hit 2020 and they gave everyone a one time 40 hours paid Covid time off. 2021 they didn’t renew the Covid sick time and because there was no sick time, employees were forced to come into work sick and spread the virus so they wouldn’t go without paychecks. They also have a fun attendance point system. If you call in, late, or have to leave early they lose points. One call in is 2 points. Once 12 points are lost they are put on notice. 20 points are automatic termination. So yeah everyone out there got Covid numerous times and had to hide it bc if you tested positive you were sent home for 10 days without pay after 2021. It was only 1 point a day for being sent home for Covid, how kind right? A few of the elderly employees died but there is still no sick time. They did go above and beyond taking money from the hourly employees quarterly bonus and bought everyone out there including the salary people who get a a month of sick time, two Covid rapid test kits.
