So I work at a job that cares for people with disabilities. They can’t keep staff so we’re always understaffed. It’s mostly either 2 or 3 of us taking care of 28 residents in one unit, and each of us either get 9 or 14 residents. I’m still new but my first day out of training I had 14 residents to care for, the only help I had was someone with a broken wrist. So couldn’t do anything and just follow me around. It’s been hard and time management is so difficult to keep up with. I never have time to take my breaks so I work 9 hrs straight and stay either 15-30 mins after. It’s hard and rare to get help from other staff sometimes, but one time I forgot to chart in my error log in book that I didn’t get lunch and one of my coworkers said, “oh it doesn’t matter, they still deduct it out of your paycheck.” So I’m basically working 30 mins for free. I tried to take my break once but that put almost an hr behind and got off super late.
Is that illegal?? Are they allowed to take my no break, and change it to where I did take my break? I don’t think I even get overtime pay. Maybe cause I’m just part time? Can’t imagine being full time. Idk, worked same hrs but seems like my paycheck keeps getting lower everytime. I love what I do and love my residents. It’s just upsetting I’m not getting paid for what I do.
Sorry just wanted to rant.
