I'm sure we've all been in a position where a manager has been legitimately dangerous or ill-tempered to their role before. Can we normalize talking about them? Normalize telling other people not to work for these ill-suited people who create overtly hostile work environments, and normalize not judging others for telling you that their previous manager was terrible! Why is it that every time I'm talking to someone at work about a previous manager, I get hushed down and told “Don't talk about your past bosses like that, you'll make it seem like you talk bad about your current bosses.” Why would that be the case if they're GOOD bosses? I liked my most recent boss! She was everything a boss should be. Collaborative, intelligent, level headed, and generous with my pay! I never had an issue when working with her, and she was willing to accommodate everything I needed accommodated. I would never dream of telling someone not to work for her. But the boss I had before her was the exact opposite in every sense of the word, and I would hope that nobody would ever become desperate enough to work for him. Prospective employees should have a right to know that they aren't going to work for someone who's going to treat them like garbage.
