I’m a team lead at my place of employment (not a manager, they’re two totally different jobs) and I’m paid hourly. Work 40 hours each week while often going overtime so let’s say generally I’m pulling 45 hours each week. I do my fair share and bust my ass for a company who probably does not care about me whatsoever. Well I got called up to a meeting where I was asked “why haven’t you been responding to emails the last couple days?” For context: I’m currently in the middle of moving and have been out of work the past couple days so I don’t have a lot of time to catch up on emails. plus I’m an hourly employee and not salary so I don’t think I should have to check my email on my off time if I’m not being paid to. well I told them that and they told me further failure to respond to emails will result in “disciplinary action” whatever they mean by that. Is it even legal for an employer to require an hourly employee to be available to respond to emails if they aren’t paying them?
