As a 19-year-old university student, I worked in retail. The job was extremely unpleasant. We had to stand for hours on end. The boss or the supervisor dictated what we could and could not do. We had to obey their orders, set up shop, close shop and even stay back extra hours. Some weeks, we were give 12-15 hours. Other weeks, we were given as little as 2-4 hours. Pay was awful. Taking time off was frowned upon.
Fast track to today where I am in my 20s, working in another job which is the exact opposite. I do not want to give the exact details of my role, but there is limited management and supervision and very limited scope to “go wrong”. I am basically given a significant degree of autonomy and as long as I get my work done on time it is fine. No snarky boss, no micromanagement, I am in control of my own time. Calling this work a “job” is an insult because it does not feel like one.
I would say that both of these jobs are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. I would say that the experience which most of us on this forum particularly dislike is the first one. Finding a good job is hard, maybe even impossible for some. But I feel that as far as constructive solutions go, finding your dream space should be the focus.
My friend recently got into streaming video games online. I have had friends who took up delivery driving or Uber driving. Others have decided to get into property investing.
Whatever it is, you have to take incremental steps to get there.
