I’ve seen a lot of posts about anti tipping in the antiwork community recently and thought I’d give a little tidbit of uncommon knowledge.
Restaurant servers typically have to tip out bussers, bartenders, hosts, and kitchen staff. Usually this amounts to 3-8% of sales.
If you go out and decide you want to avoid tipping for some personal belief, that’s fine but you should also know where the line in the sand is when it comes to tipping.
If you tip 8%, odds are you’re actually just giving the amount to cover what your server needs to pay the support staff. This is the true zero.
If you tip zero, you are essentially stealing labor and letting your server pay a fee for the privilege of serving you.
P.S, I’d prefer not to see comments about employers needing to pay out minimum wage if tips aren’t enough, mainly because I count on this sub to know that minimum wage isn’t really an acceptable amount of money in exchange for labor.
Edit: The point of this post is not to demonize non tippers, but to inform you of the actual effects of tipping zero. Tipping is a practice that needs to go, but I’d ask to be mindful that servers are, at the end of the day, humans. If you are not going to tip while also giving your business to scumbag restaurants who would pay their people $2/hour, just be kind to your server.
