Notice cut short

Tale as old as time. But I just wanted to come here and post a few points to see if anyone had any thoughts, advice, support? If you have time to read. I just gave my notice to the law firm where I’ve been a receptionist for just under six months. It’s a connection through a mutual friend so I was very forthcoming with my process. 🙁 I came to the realization my job was not a good fit due to a toxic work environment and low pay, and decided I couldn’t prioritize it anymore as I was turning down other lucrative and more satisfying offers. Pretty much right after deciding this I told the attorney who I mainly assisted what my thoughts were about it not working and that I’d like to give them ample notice so I didn’t pull the rug out from under them. 🙁

  1. I came to the realization my job was not a good fit due to a toxic work environment and low pay, and decided I couldn’t prioritize it anymore as I was turning down other lucrative and more satisfying offers.

  2. Pretty much right after deciding this I told the attorney who I mainly assisted what my thoughts were about it not working and that I’d like to give them ample notice so I didn’t pull the rug out from under them. I was looking at 3 weeks to a month that I was willing to give. I said I was looking into another job and that I would give him a concrete date as soon as I could. He left for vacation for that following week.

  3. I had a successful interview and got hired, and first thing this morning I went to each member of the firm to tell them, in person, and I also sent an email thanking them for their time and for the opportunity. I stated that I’m giving two weeks notice.

  4. My coworker, a dear family friend of theirs, came to my desk and said she was instructed to come up and ask me what things needed to be finished and how to do pretty much everything. So, I did that to the best of my ability. Definitely didn’t do as thorough a job as I would if I had been training someone but I wasn’t totally sure what was going on.

  5. I was asked into my boss’s office, where he and the office manager sat. He asked me if there was anything they could do better, and I told them that they could massively improve on communication and that the office manager should be included in the hiring process because I felt she needed someone with more skills than me and we were not a good match.

  6. He thanked me for being candid and then told me that he was disappointed (he was angry) that I had told my other employer a week earlier and that he didn’t know. I said I wasn’t going to give notice until I had it. And I told them as soon as I had it.

  7. He moved on to tell me that they had paid me more than they were comfortable with for my position (I was sitting there getting in debt. $12/hr full time for the first month and $16/hr after that. I’m sorry it just wasn’t enough and I had to take on additional work).

  8. He then told me about how it was wrong for me to have taken vacation days. Before I knew that I would be moving on. He said he was shocked that I’d used so many vacation days in my 6 months. I used them because I had them? I don’t know? My coworker who started the day after me used all of hers in less time. I used half.

Yeah I was told to pack it up and leave. I did. I don’t know what to say I did what was right for myself and tried to be honest about it. I feel like he just really wanted to try to make it sting because he felt that I had screwed him over? I don’t know.

If you read this I really appreciate it.
