I was a server at this fine dining restaurant, $40-$60 a plate type of place. I was serving this morning and they told me I had to come back this afternoon to host. They pay $8 an hour for that. I told them there was no way in hell I would work for $8 an hour. I would have worked from 5 until maybe 9, so I would have made $32 BEFORE taxes. That's disrespectful to me and how valuable my time is. I stayed firm that I wouldnt work for $8 an hour so he fired me.
My boss was genuinely shocked I said no, he told me “everyone does it.” I hope everyone else stands up for themselves and stops doing all of this extra shit for them soon. Last week they added watering of all of the plants outside to our sidework list. We are not gardeners and we dont get paid to landscape? They take advantage of people at every turn.
They've been wanting to fire me ever since the owner overheard me say I was mad I only made $43 one shift. We were so overstaffed and I had two tables that morning. He called me for a meeting before I went home that day and told me “if my wife came home and said she was mad she only made $40 I would tell her she made enough on Saturday and that it evens out and I really just dont care.” He told me if I gave him a hard time that he would purposefully not give me tables that he knows tip good. That was the day I went home and started applying for other jobs.
