So I use to work at Subway, I had quit a previous job because they weren't obligated to give me hours and so they weren't, only the people who had been working there 5+ years were getting the hours (I lived on an army post soo… the Civilans that lived off post unaffiliated got priority over everything)
At first it was okay, I understand the owner was a perfectionist. She didn't have any managers but her son in law who worked at the food restaurant next to us was I guess technically in charge? Anyways all good.
I think the problem started though when we would clean and do everything we were supposed to and she still said we had to do it again, even having one of the employees on his knees all day to scrub the tile lines, also I found it wierd that instead of moping she wanted us to just spray bleach on the floor and mop because it was quicker. Also, it was like my 1st week and she would get mad at me for not remembering by heart how to make a sandwich like lady this is my 2nd day can you please relax?
All those were okay. Just an owner trying to run her store so it was whatever…. but the first red flag happened when my grandpa passed away in his sleep and I had to leave within the week for the funeral. Her response? “Well usually you have to give a few weeks notice” like… pretty sure we weren't planning on my grandpa to die but I told her I was going to the funeral in 2 days whether she approved or not. She did give me a hug though as I was in tears so I didn't think she was terrible. Just really bad at managing people. (Even her son in law said she was bad at it so isn't that a bit telling)
The second red flag? She told me she liked running a business in India more because they don't have so many labor laws…. umm excuse me? What?
And I think my final straw was, there were 2 of us working on the line and scheduled (she kept us super understaffed) she walked with the senior employee to take inventory and order things they needed. Anyways I'm working by myself and I make a smoothie for one of the customers, later when I clocked out the owner called me blaming me for them being out of milk and not saying they were out. Like… yall were JUST doing inventory how am I gonna get blamed for you being unaware of being out of milk? So! She tells ME to go to the store and buy them more milk. the closest grocery store was 30min away and the local px is so small I was unsure if they even had milk, so I go and luckily they do and I spend MY OWN MONEY buying stupid milk when the owner could have done that and I get cash back for it
Anyways, a big training was coming up and I was not about to give this lady my time so I told my coworkers I was quitting and leaving at the end of the week and they understood and said it was okay.
I told the owner I was quitting and my last day was gonna be the end of the week instead of 2 weeks and she was so mad saying she did me a FAVOR by LETTING ME WORK THERE. Like lady, I didn't even need the job I just wanted to make some money and get out of the house.
Fair enough anytime I went in and she was there she would ignore my whole existence which didn't matter to me. And, pretty much everyone that worked there also pretty much all left.
I did later regret leaving my other job for a subway job because even know they clearly were scheduleding their favorites, my manager was pretty chill and all my coworkers were nice. And the pay was better too, while being relaxed.
