Out of Network “Health Insurance” is complete, diarrhea BS!

Hello, everybody. My name is Cazidin and today I ask one simple question! A friend of mine from Texas suffered a serious leg injury a couple years back. While they mostly healed up, something didn't set quite right and nobody is sure what. This friend, who we'll call Thomas, has gone through a few in-network doctors, eventually finding one they like… there's just one problem. Also. And this isn't particularly relevant but why is there even a network to begin with? If I pay for health insurance, I expect that to apply wherever I go. What if I happen to get injured while out of state visiting friends and family, and am rushed to a hospital well outside my own network in this hypothetical timeline?
