I work as an electrician, in general, I enjoy my job. But it is endlessly discouraging when I get sent to work for wealthier customers. All, with the exception of a few, have been absolutely insufferable, vapid, and shallow people with no respect for labor and the skill that comes with any form of labor.At any point in these mansions and large luxury homes, I and my fellow workers are the most skilled and competent people in the building. Yet these homeowners treat us like we are dumb animals. I've had a customer recently who lives in a mini-mansion on a lake with fancy boats and multiple garages for their surplus of cars complain about service rates and try to refuse me payment because 'all I did was change lightbulbs'. My supervisor is insanely incompetent and I could make a massive post about all of the crazy shit they've done in the past 6 months I've worked here, but I dont have that kind of time. So long story short, this time my boss says that all of the vacation days were approved except for saturdays. And that I have to find someone to take my saturday… in 5 months. I gave notice in febuary that I would be going on vacation in june, I feel like thats plenty of notice to schedual a replacement. I want to preface this with saying that my boss has a set schedual for everyone, specific cookie cutter days and times every week, forever. I was a Customer Success Manager for the best sales rep in our company. He has been there for years and had deep relationships with all 60 of his accounts (deep as in went fishing with, knew their families). Side note: he hand-wrote all of his notes and his home office had filing cabinets FILLED with information about where accounts stood, things coming up, what each account was interested in. He found a better job and let the company know and said since he has a good relationship with his accounts and it's the right thing to do he is giving them 30 days and within that time he will introduce the appropriate rep to his accounts to have a smooth transition. Like the US, Australia also has a big problem with staff in 'unskilled' roles being treated like disposable dish towels (gotta wring every last bit out before you fling them at the bin) due to the endless stream of backpackers looking for work (pre Covid). Most of the staff I worked with were either backpackers or students, as anyone who could afford to quit would immediately do so. In Australia, staff can be employed on a 'casual' basis; 25% extra hourly wage, but with no sick pay, holiday pay or health benefits, and can be let go any time for any reason. I was employed by a river cruise company that owned 3 large Mississippi-style paddle wheel boats, and one ex-ferry that could pass for an oversized bath tub on a good day. I worked at a remote call center position for almost a year. I worked night shift most of the time, but had recently been switched to overnight (my choice). Regardless of shift, there was 0 support from management, no support from my team or anyone. When systems were down, we were still expected to take calls despite not having access to anything to document them. My first manager was incredible, probably the best manager I’ve ever had. Then I got suddenly moved to a bilingual team (I’m not bilingual) and it was just terrible. My metrics were falling, I was having 3-4 anxiety attacks a shift from being constantly berated over things I had no control over.
