Do less work for more money
This might seem like an odd rant, but here goes. I work for a tiny internet and cable company. We provide service to a couple dozen small towns and cities. I've been here for about a year and a half, running one of their branch offices and being part of their customer care phone team. I'm on the phone 10 hours a day (4 days a week) and I make roughly twice the minimum wage. About a month ago, I was offered an opportunity to interview for a position with the business team – same company, but substantially less work and much higher pay. I had a few interviews and just got the job a few days ago. I'm excited about the opportunity – and I would never complain about this to anyone in power – but I'll be doing quite a bit less than I'm doing now and (after…
He has been working for this company as a tech for five months. He works the night shift from Tuesday to Friday (gets off at 4am) and then is expected to come in at 10am Saturday morning. They are understaffed, but the higher ups say that the team needs to be more productive to justify hiring someone else. And each “activity” is viewed as the same level of productivity. So doing a two hour repair on a bed gets the same productivity points as slapping on a sticker on a bed. They told him that he was going to get 20 dollars an hour but started him at 19. He gets zero holiday pay despite working Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Recently, one of his coworkers crashed one of the company trucks so the company took away the bonuses for everyone. I just don’t understand. These managers don’t seem to…
I have been working as an insurance agent for about 4 years. I have always been way better at service than sales. I hate sales. So when my current employer offered me a job, I made it VERY clear that I am not motivated by money, I am not good at selling, but I am good at helping people. She needed a service person anyway. As she already had two producers. She told me I do not have to do sales. She specifically hired me for service. All she asked was that I cross sell to current clients that had mono lines. For example, ask someone where their homeowners insurance is if all they have with us is auto. Which I am fine with, because I do that anyway. That is kind of part of servicing. I am not into cold calling, I am not into asking strangers, while I…
Unions are the answer
This should be the number 1 topic of discussion in this group yet none of you ever mention it. Look at the prevalence of unions in the 1950’s when a single earner could make enough money to support a family. Look at the prevalence of unions. Then compare that to today. Unions are the ones that have fought for fair work days and pay. It’s not just something that magically happened. Organize and support unions. Oppose right to (exploit) work laws and demand your representatives oppose them.
Homelessness is vilified because
They aren't tax payers for the most part The uberrich, and by extent the ones in power that they control around the globe, would suddenly not be getting their money (no taxes) In this respect, I almost believe if everyone stopped working for a short period (people would have to give personal care to those in hospitals) ((vandalism would be rampant for this period)) They could suddenly demand changes for the better I think I read once about a country being started to escape too much control…
Already hating new job..
I'm gonna be honest. The new job I started doesn't seem all that bad. It's chat based contact center. I know I know, contact center, but it's chat-only, y'know? This is mainly a vent and feel free to criticize/remove post as needed. This is fresh on the heels of a 2 month break after quitting my last job as a hostess as a restaurant. I figure trading 5 11+hour days for 5 8hr days from home would be fine. I'm week 2 of training and already burnt out and over it. Long zoom meetings for training, lots of “We're here to invest in you” speeches, while shoving information down our throats. We get 1 20min break and a 30min lunch (this is in the us). Lots of “be accountable, be back on time, 1 minute late is still late” speeches. Etc. I -need- a job because as it stands right…
I am working on getting an intern to help support me and to mentor at my current job. The issue is the company refused my request to pay more than $20/hr for skilled labor (the cost to rent a studio in this city is over $1k a month) and they won't offer any sort of package to help them move here. I doubt I will find someone to fill the position with such crappy pay and benefits. I am just so frustrated since this company loves to tout record earnings and growth, but won't even budge on a few dollars more toward pay. There isn't a labor shortage. There is a shortage of jobs that pay livable wages and provide basic benefits.
Healthcare costs have gotten out of control in this country because of scumbag insurance middlemen. I guess my question is what would the outcome be for everyone if we collectively decided to just…. Not pay our bills? If a Facebook group can make raiding Area 51 a national phenomenon, I don’t see why we can’t use social media to influence a payment strike on the industry. Most people can’t pay thousands of dollars for their bills anyways and I feel like not spending money on healthcare, which is something almost everyone in this county agrees is predatory, would be easy to convince people to do regardless of political affiliation. The big thing that will scare people is a ding on their credit, but if a good portion of Americans are willing to take a bad mark on their credit report it could shake things up.
