I think I deserve a better pay for being bilingual

I speak Spanish which is pretty common. Hispanics bring a lot of profit to this shop I work since there are a lot around. But the problem is that most of them don t speak English and I am the only one who speak both Spanish and English so the whole time I m there the manager comes and says stuff like “we have people who don t wanna speak English in America” and I have to go up front to get them taken care of. It has became annoying! Even during my lunch I have to leave because if not he comes bug me. I m about to grab the devil by its tail and tell them to give me a raise or I will quit since I m doing the job of a translator too.

So after a few weeks of people refusing to work 8 hours straight in the cold we started working until 12pm.

So for the second day in a row this Friday we had come in early for “cleaning the tools”. At first we were confused the first time our boss drove out to the job site and told us that at 12 we were to stop. This happened after weeks of the new guys and some of the older workers refusing to work in the bitter cold unless its for about 1 hour then we take a break, then another hour then another break and so on. Our boss would make half hearted jokes about us not working or that we should take pride in out work because we were helping out the community. Now, it seems he's taking it easier on us. Is this a win or are our bosses planning something? I'm unsure at this time.

Quit my job as a “barista” today

Was hired as a barista for a Starbucks inside of a Fred Meyer’s. Did bagging with cashiers for 2 weeks before the trainer for baristas showed up since our department doesn’t have a lead. The trainer tells me and one other girl in our group that we won’t be certified by the end of the week because we’re not available 40 hours to train. The last day the trainer is there, they try to get me to do the equivalent of ogp at Walmart there and I say no that I’d rather go home. They’ve been having me do front end this past week again and are unsure when I will get certified. I found out baggers and cashiers make $18 an hour vs the $17.53 I make as a barista even though I haven’t really worked in that department since I got here. The leads wanted to get me…

Would you be happy working as a cashier or some other menial job if you got paid a “living wage”?

Is your argument that you don't like menial work or that you just want more money? If I paid you $60k a year to sit in a room for 8 hours a day and literally do nothing, would you accept?

Maybe companies give things like pizza parties as “rewards” instead of bonuses to encourage interpersonal relationships between employees by creating a common misery thus leading employees to stay longer and drive higher value. “I hate my job but love the people.”

Resignation letters should be short and simple. What you tell your employers is up to you. Consider this carefully.

I have been working for more than 35 years, never a manager. I started in minimum wage jobs and thankfully had opportunities to build a great career. I share this with the intention of helping others that have less experience with various workplaces – including professional jobs, good jobs, shit jobs, and abusive managers. Please feel free to reply, discuss, and amend my advice. Resignation letters are a formal notice document. They only need a few things: Identify yourself and your recipients A statement that you resign and the date of your last day of work Your signature and today's date No benefit comes from adding anything else. Do not include why you're resigning or where you're going. This is simply a legal requirement – not a forum to discuss. This is the essence of at-will employment. What to say if asked. This is something you must decide beforehand. The…

“Work Hard, Earn It” mindset

This is an older story but definitely still applies to today I worked at a retail chain in NE America, they're only in 5 states so I wont name drop them. I was 16-19 when I had this job. I worked very hard, and it showed a lot. Many people would point it out, and my manager loved it. In the summers I would work 60/hrs a week earning overtime as long as my union allowed. Over all it was great other than massive turn over because 80% of the staff was 16-18. I stuck around and became a certified training and got an extra $1/hr, plus another $1 if I was training that shift. It was great, but I never surpassed $11/hr. The summer I would be turning 18 I voiced I wanted to be a Lead Cashier/Coordinator, which was a promotion. They said they wanted to see me…

California – New job refuses to pay for training.

Long story short, my girlfriend applied for a waitress job at a new restaurant in town. They told her to come back the next day at 9AM. She worked until 12PM and was given a log in around that time. Manager told her to clock in and she worked until around 1:15ish. She was informed later that the first 3 hours of her “training” would not be paid since she doesn’t have experience, which is bs. She was asked to make drinks, greet guests and carry out random tasks throughout the first 3 hours. She then asked another girl who had been there longer and she said she was getting paid for her “training.” She does have experience working at a few coffee shops and restaurants back in college. Not sure what kind of training you need on top of that. I am well aware this is illegal, at least…
