So I read another post on here a while ago about mandatory internships in Europe and I just need to get this off my chest: It's so fucking bullshit. I don't know how other countries do it, but here in the Netherlands many educations force an intenrship to be completed before you are able to graduate. Now I think internships for college students are a good idea, they definitely help you build more experience than just reading and learning about your field. My problem lies with the fact that I have to work 40 hours a week for 4-5 months straight until you meet the 800 hour requirement. That's 800 hours of work that you are NOT getting paid for. I'm a long-time lurker, a first-time poster. I had big dreams in college. I studied pre-law and graduated near the top of my class. I landed an internship at the prosecutor's office for a large city. I never wanted to be a corporate lawyer. I wanted to work at the government level, either as a public defender or similar. It was always about helping the little guy. During my six-month internship, I learned about the meager salaries public defenders made. Combined with the high cost of law school, I abandoned my goal to accept a position at a major brokerage firm. I’m in a remote area of Alaska we’ve had a pretty rough winter, I just moved here like 6 months ago some elders have told us at my job it the worst since the 80s. Any way my boss gets upset if enough people can’t get in to open the bank. Right now the roads are so bad from the rain and snow combo we’ve had this week the school is canceled, the hospital is only open for emergencies and only has staff that is needed to come in, but the bank it must be open. I really hate because she doesn’t want to close I have to use my pto since I car Share with my mom in law and her work is closed. I wish my other coworkers understood that if it’s not safe that a job is not worth risking your life.

WFH making $100,000 in the Midwest, averaging anywhere from 5-25 hours of actual work per week, including meetings. I live in fear that I’ll lose my job for this reason. I’ve never made so much money and worked so little. I love it but it’s hard to relax. I don’t want to alert my boss and seem not necessary.

Background: Working at Vermont Information Processing for the past 3-4 years. Software Engineer 3 and great relationships with my coworkers, top performer, etc. This morning around 10AM me and a few coworkers had the idea to create a form that would feed into a spreadsheet so that developers could (if they wanted to – anonymously) post their salaries in order to be transparent in the development department. Within an hour, my gmail account was disabled, and shortly after that my macbook was remotely disabled.
