50/50 It’s what’s fair

Player's unions for organizations like the NBA, NFL and NHL, parce out half of the income revenue to their players, and each player is given what they have negotiated for and their negotiations are based on how much money that player brings to the organization that owns the team, or somethingto that effect. I might be wrong about that but as far as the arguments in the class action lawsuit against the UFC, that reasoning was sited as an example of why the fighters should be paid their fair share. 50/50 makes a lot of sense to me. I'm not at all a financial expert, but this makes sense to me I'm kinda hopinf this community will poke holes in the idea so I can shore it up. For large companies (I picked an arbitrary number of 100 or more employees for no real reason) half the of income revenue…

Frustrating conversation with a new colleague

An older gentleman was hired by my company and started this week. He's very knowledgeable and experienced, so while doing some training on our system I asked him about his previous jobs. He went on to tell me about how in the early 2000s he managed a couple successful AT&T stores. His total pre-tax take home (salary, bonuses, etc) was over $140k. They offered him the same job again a few years ago for $60k, and were surprised he didn't jump at the opportunity. I'm constantly surprised at the absolute lack of understanding by companies, even when I should know better. Even though they acknowledged that he was a valuable employee and had decades of experience, they still go on to low-ball as if it's a “favor” to get a mediocre offer.

Thinking of offering to do the work of two people to get a raise.

I’m terrible at negotiating. I’m the lowest paid with the most experience/time with the company. I’ve gotten one raise in three years and still make less than the others. I feel like the only way my boss will agree to pay me the more is if I help out at a new facility until they can find coverage. It’s crazy that the only way I feel I can make what I should at this company is to do the work of others. As crazy as that is I stay for the flexibility and short commute. Would you do it?

Culture Index? What is this? My job hired a consultant to “help us work better together” and everyone is required to submit a personality test.

Toxic OR Not

This is an open ended question for all my lovely working Redditors out there. So, I've been working in customer service from 3 years and it's my first company. Since WFH, a lot of changes have been taking place within the company and i wanted to know if this sounds normal everywhere. Cons: Installation of security camera on our work computers for surveillance where we're not allowed to use phone, anything that looks like an electronic device and this thing monitors us for 9hrs straight. Change of notice period from 30 to 60 and then to 90 days since lots of people started quitting all of a sudden. Introduction of a security software that allows managers to view our Desktop screen at anytime. Making wellness sessions mandatory. Centralisation of incentive plans which ended up with employees losing out on their earning potential. Menial paycheck hikes from 3 years. Pros: Leave…

Recruiters, what is your experience lately?

Are you receiving quality applications and are you able to hire like you did before the pandemic? I’m new to hiring and have been tasked with doing so for a new position that will work for me. I don’t agree with the salary that has been approved (35-38k USD) for an “entry-level” job that actually requires a lot of experience. We already hired someone who, because of the soul crushing work and completely different “actual” responsibilities than the job requirements, quit after 1 week. Since then the job was reposted and we haven’t had any applicants. HR tells me this is the way things are right now, it’s difficult to find good candidates. Instead I think candidates are smarter and just refuse to apply to positions they know aren’t worth it.

“It’s not in our policy giving contracts to sign”

Guys I'm very confused. UK here, my gf's got a new job recently, seems fine but she hasn't signed a contract when she started working?? Sounds weird to me, never heard of this before. She barely had an interview before her “trial day” to know what the pay is (minimum wage), and after the same it was just an informal “so, coming back tomorrow?”. “It's not in our company policy” that's what they say… what company policy? Are there company policies? Would be nice to know because there's that piece of paper with all the important stuff missing from my hands. And yet my gf is working right now, having no idea whatsoever how do holidays work, or how does her pension work, doesn't even know if she can change her status to “employed”. She's still getting paid, that's not a problem, but how do you assure it's fair, if…

Agriculture labor laws needs major improvement

My girlfriend currently is working at a chicken farm as a cleaner/driver for workers in the barns. They don't pay any overtime (due to a racist law from the 1930s agriculture doesn't have to pay overtime I guess) and they demand she works far past her scheduled time (off at 5:30 but instead gets off at more like 9:00) and now her manager is requiring her to go in for just 20 minutes on her day off to make a single pick up. No overtime, no compensation, the pay won't even cover gas.
