Pay rise rejected because they want people ‘who are motivated by the great work and team, not just the money’.

I work for a large mining company. Upon signing my contract, I was promised a salary review 6 months in, as I knew others within my team earnt more and I had equal experience and qualifications as them. During my first 6 months, I've totally killed it. Managing a huge portfolio, getting great feedback from stakeholders and doing it all with a smile on my face. Today I was told by management (my 1 up and 2 up) that I wouldn't be getting a payrise (used an excuse of budget currently under review) and that, anyways, they wanted people to be motivated by the work they did and team they work for, not just money (imply I am greedy). This was communicated to me by 2 people who earn 2-4 times more than I do. What is an adequate comeback to this statement? I was gobsmacked.
