My company periodically sends out phishing test emails as a form of ongoing cyber security training. We have a “report phishing” button built into our email and when a fake phishing email is reported a popup will congratulate you on keeping the company safe.
Well we received one of these emails today. It was blatantly obvious that it was one of their test emails, and checked all the boxes our training usually covers. The problem this time? It was a fake company email saying how the company is stepping up to help employees during this time of record inflation, and the trap hyperlink was said to be a link to “resources to help employees during this time”.
Here’s the exact transcript:
(My name),
(Company name) understands inflation is impacting everyone. Our goal is to help employees through these challenging times. This benefit is available to all (company name) employees. Please click here (trap hyperlink) to access a list of resources to better help all those at (company name) manage inflation’s impact.

(Company name)
Then the popup showed the usual “congratulations on keeping us safe”. The kicker about all of this? The company has done absolutely zero to help employees with inflation. Our “merit increases” this year were 3%, heavily outpaced by inflation so we all took a pay cut for the second year in a row.
And to top it off, they just announced an extra day each week in office starting in August just when gas hit an all time record high. This is despite us overcoming huge supply challenges in 2020 and 2021 and achieving the highest profit level in company history last year while we were all remote. And our current in-office day each week? Everyone just sits at their cubicle and quietly works just as they would at home, and all meetings are still through MS Teams calls since different departments are in office on different days.
Employees are hurting and they just do not care. I honestly just feel like they are mocking us at this point. The amount of tone-deafness is staggering. Honestly don’t know what I can do about it so I just wanted to vent. Company will remain anonymous because I need my job.
