So I recently got a part-time (I'm a college student)job at a fast-casual restaurant. Initially the hiring went well and interviews went well if anything the interviews were a bit bare bones, and I end up getting the job. Well, for two weeks after that their ADP website that I filled out my I9 on didn't show up in their system. No biggie, I'll check it again right? Of course not. It isn't showing up so I have to go into the place to do it on the general manager's laptop. Surely, now this will be the end of this buffoonery and I can get started and get paid!
It worked, for some time, I started my training days, which was only 3 days of work training out of 2 weeks, which pissed me off because I had made clear I had pretty decent availability for being a student. This last Monday I was working, basically up to speed with everything and one of the managers comes up to me and says “hey I haven't seen you since we hired you! So you're available Saturday, Sunday, and Monday right?” To which I replied “no I am available those days AND Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons” I had previously put this on my application and written it down for two separate managers. Nice job guys
Now we get to the bullshit. Yesterday (Friday) I am in my class when all of the sudden I get a call from my workplace. I pick up the phone thinking they're going to ask me to pick up a shift or something, but that was not the case. A manager called to to “inform” me that my I9 information was still not complete, and that if it wasn't in by Sunday I would be terminated. I immediately said to her “I have done this 3 times for you guys, one of those being RIGHT NEXT TO A MANAGER, how in the world is this still a problem, let alone my fault?” She basically just replied “corporate is telling us that” Also, this apparently is happening with the other new hire.
So now I'm sitting here wondering, have I even been an employee while I've been working? If I get terminated because of their shitty website and poor management of their services is this wrongful termination? This just pisses me off, this workplace has made simple onboarding a new hire such a hassle .
Tldr: My workplace has informed me that I will be terminated by tomorrow if my I9 information isn't complete meaning I'm not even an employee, problem is I've done it three times, including in front of them so it's completely out of my control and on them. Add on me working three days and we got a weird and stupid situation.
