I work for a bank, no not in a position that has made me rich.
But every day I see how expensive it is to be poor.
Fees get taken out for, of all things, not having enough money.
But then there's also the fees that hit from the companies that try to charge people.
“Oh you can't pay your mortgage on time? Here, have this $30 fee. Oh, you can't pay your light bill on time? Here, have this $15 penalty for not being able to pay it. Need to buy food? OK fine, but since you can't afford the discount of spending more by buying in bulk, your markup penalty ranges from $0.10 cents per item to $1.00 in large enough quantities. Individually it is very low, but for daily items the difference amounts to hundreds or even thousands per year.
“Oh you can't afford this $200 pair of work boots that will last you for ten years? Well here's a $50 pair you'll replace every six months for all ten years for a cumulative cost of $1000.”
Need a laptop for college? Well you can't buy one, but you can finance one at a 30% markup over the time spent paying it off.
Need to go to college? Well that 50,000 student loan will be paid off two times over in total by the time you've actually paid down 20% of it.
The reality is we're not going to get rid of 'work' any time soon. So while you've got to have it, unionize, unite, and work together to make it so nobody who works, has to labor in poverty to feed the wealthy who literally count on poverty to increase their profits.
