Previous employer is asking for uniforms back that I paid half for without giving me my money back. Is this allowed?

I started to work for a local HVAC company and quit 4 weeks in because i kept having to hound them to pay me on time. They’re now asking for the uniforms that I paid half for back without giving me the money they deducted from my checks back. Is this allowed? I live in Maine for reference
