‘Progressive’ health insurance company has the day off for Election Day- outsources cheaper labor to ‘hold down the fort’ for a day in production- a nightmare

For some background I work- essentially for a company that is just a legal white collar sweatshop- it’s a company that provides customer service to other startups at a premium- the people in my company can be doing the same work or more and mostly being paid less then those who work for the actual company. It’s shitty. The actual company I work for go through a pretty intense screening and hiring process with a start offer of $15.00 an hour. The team I work for is for a ‘progressive’ health insurance company- sure they’re trying to make health insurance more transparent and user friendly- it’s still a health insurance company (in the states) at the end of the day. The way it breaks down is my team is provider facing- dealing with claims and benefit calls- weird situations, etc. the other side- the company were contracted with are member…

The team I work for is for a ‘progressive’ health insurance company- sure they’re trying to make health insurance more transparent and user friendly- it’s still a health insurance company (in the states) at the end of the day. The way it breaks down is my team is provider facing- dealing with claims and benefit calls- weird situations, etc. the other side- the company were contracted with are member facing. They typically deal with more nuanced situations and we deal with higher volume. The job itself isn’t hard and it’s easy to streamline- like any other job it can just be allot going on at once- though my team is small (less than 13) we are pretty good at doing the job. Today was Election Day- though I agree Election Day should be a national holiday- it is asinine that a working health insurance company would take this day- which is mostly a regular Tuesday for most provider offices/persons live. In this case my team (again less than 13) were expected to cover both provider and member volume. There are only 4 of us trained on member situations. Needless to say this day was nothing less than a nightmare. The company we’re contracted with had signed 800+ companies (not just individuals) on in the last 3 months. The irony is that this company is so ‘progressive’ in ways like mental health and politically- they don’t realize they’re just as bad as any other insurance company if not worse outsourcing customer facing individuals at half the cost they pay their own employees and expect the business to run smoothly when they make decisions to have a ‘holiday’ and give their own employees the day off. Oh also we as a team only learned that this was happening this last Friday.
