Mods please remove if not allowed. Here’s some background: I’ve been out of full time work since June of this year and have applied to over 200 places. Only 20-30 I’ve had interviews for. I’ve been doing gig work but I need something more stable. I applied to job A last week as it was full time, within my salary range, and in a supervisory role.
I interviewed at job A two days ago and was told in my interview that they filled the supervisory role I had applied for and only had the part time associate role open. I continued with the interview because I had no choice, either be jobless and homeless or scrape by with pennies to spare. I was offered the position yesterday.
Before interviewing with job A, I found a job (B) posting for my dream job. I passed 3 rounds of interviews with job B and got invited to interview with the head manager next week. Their recruiter even scheduled me for a call to prep me for the big interview because they really want me in this position.
My interview with job B is on Tuesday. I told job A I could start next Friday just in case I landed the other position and didn’t waste their time or mine on training me. Job A sent me an offer letter with my first day of employment and orientation on the same day and the same time as my dream interview. I emailed them back with a “per my last email” message and they said the orientation was already pre planned for all new employees and could not be rescheduled. I had already scheduled the interview before receiving the job offer letter.
I am super torn. I can’t reschedule job B interview because that was the only available time slot. I can’t reschedule job A orientation because it was “pre planned” even though I was not informed until receiving the offer letter.
Do I push to reschedule my dream interview for a potential position and instead prioritize orientation for guaranteed income or vice versa? I’m already frustrated with job A for not telling me the role I had applied for was already filled nor what day orientation would be, but I’m not sure if the gamble is worth it. If I lose job A and don’t get job B, I am still in the same position I have been in for months.
For reference: this is in California where min wage $15/hr. Job A is $17 +tips, job B is $25 + bonuses. Any input is greatly appreciated.
