Question about wrongful termination

I’m told that if you’re laid off for “elimination of position” but they backfill anyway, it’s wrongful termination. But does that only apply if the person laid off can prove it was used to lay them off to mask an illegal reason? My position was “eliminated” and the 6 people I manage are reporting to someone else. These are basically all tradesmen. The person they are reporting to has no trade background, and no formal degree. I am a tradesmen and have a BS. Lastly, before I was laid off, the manager my team is now reporting to was asked specifically by our manager if he could manage my team and he said “no, I don’t have the technical knowledge” and this manager and I also spoke before my layoff where he told me about this conversation and said “I told the vp I couldn’t do your job, but you…

My position was “eliminated” and the 6 people I manage are reporting to someone else. These are basically all tradesmen.

The person they are reporting to has no trade background, and no formal degree.

I am a tradesmen and have a BS.

Lastly, before I was laid off, the manager my team is now reporting to was asked specifically by our manager if he could manage my team and he said “no, I don’t have the technical knowledge” and this manager and I also spoke before my layoff where he told me about this conversation and said “I told the vp I couldn’t do your job, but you could manage my team with less than 2 months training”

I was laid off, he wasn’t. I can do his job, he can’t do mine. I’m pretty sure I was picked because of my salary being a lot higher. 30k+ more.

Does that scenario seem like I have a case?
