Question- If you’re an hourly employee but are required to travel overnight, should you get paid all 24 hours you’re away from home each day?

So I’m an hourly employee for the state , but I am required to travel including internationally. I was told I would only be paid my normal 8-5 daily work hours even if I was in another state or country for work , hence work time not personal time. I am angry but my family says that that’s just the way it goes and to get over it. I feel that if they are expecting me to be away from my home and family for work, I should be compensated for it. Thoughts?
