And I feel proud of myself for doing so.
(NB: I live in France so if you have any knowledge of French laws that I might not, please let me know)
I was working in a hotel as a cleaner. They pay you 20 minutes of minimum wage per room – regardless of how long it takes to do it. So if you’re new (like I was!) and don’t have much practice, or if you have a particularly dirty room (common), then you simply don’t get paid for any time you do above 20 minutes. + 10 minutes, + 20 minutes, per room it all adds up.
In fact, it adds up throughout the day, sometimes to several hours unpaid. They also don’t pay you for doing other stuff, like laundering your dirty clothes, sorting your carts, taking out bin bags etc, which is also time consuming and laborious, as these things are heavy and the job is tiring and causes aches and pains as is.
I think they saw me as a young migrant worker who doesn’t know her rights. Little did they know I’ve been in trade unions for four years (I’m 23). I know my rights. I won’t stand for any less. And you shouldn’t either.
PS: I sent my resignation as an email. My boss left a voicemail asking why I left. Should I send another email saying what I’ve said here? I’m quite shy over the phone so don’t plan to call back.
