I (finally) resigned from a job I have been unhappy in for years. I have had very open conversations with my managers over the past few years but they kept ignoring my concerns and telling me what I was feeling wasn’t happening.
I had a conversation about three months ago with two managers asking why I was so underpaid compared to market comparisons and internal salaries of coworkers with less experience than me. They both literally said “if that’s not good enough then you should pursue other opportunities.” I have, I received two offers, both for substantially more (I’m getting a 37% pay rise) and with senior titles.
One of the managers stopped me in the hallway today at work acting all surprised. I said “I don’t know why you’re surprised, you literally told me to pursue other opportunities.” They acted all surprised saying “What?!” and then conceded saying “But I didn’t think it would be so soon!” Like I said, it’s been a good 3 months since the last conversation with them and neither checked in since, OF COURSE I was pursuing other opportunities!
But for them to feign naivety and be shocked that I had resigned after being miserable for years AND after they told me to…these people. Honestly, it’s like they’re insisting it ends on even worse terms than it already is with management.
