Asking because this is my first “corporate” job with nothing else to compare it to.
Hired a social media manager. 12 years experience in photography and design (Dont judge my transition, times are tough right now). Do a-lot of design work within my role for various digital marketing projects.
Small web and marketing company husband and wife owned. Their expectations:
-expect employees to work after hours.
-dish out last min tasks (5pm) all the time.
-offer ZERO training.
-have openly told me im expected to learn on my own time.
I took one day off in 3 1/2 months. I was berated because social posts did not go out that day. (We are having difficulties with our scheduling system and everything needs to be done manually at the moment). My boss said i should have either 1. Scheduled it myself ON MY DAY OFF. Or 2. Ask a coworker to do my job.
Even though I’ve been told many times I’ve improved their social media accounts my boss STILL:
-checks ALL work before it can be posted or sent
-does not ever listen to my ideas.
-when something needs troubleshooting and i have the solution she does not listen to me and basically ignores me.
Whenever i have a question she is late to respond which of course delays progress as i need her approval on everything.
In addition to above I RARELY see my bosses (we work in a small office space and only 6 of us at one time). They’re always in meetings with my other coworkers, and clearly favour them. I am early 30’s and the oldest there and the only one (besides the bosses) with children. I feel as tho im ostracized for wanting work/life balance.
Ive not even had a performance review.
Since being there 2 people have quit not counting the person I replaced. They FINALLY just hired a new girl (22F) and these were my boss highlights about here:
-she’s use to working many roles and knows a “little bit” about everything.
-she never takes days off
-she is hungry and willing to learn what she needs to on her OWN time.
-shes not a “chatty cathy”
-shes willing to work until the jobs done no matter the hour.
Not to mention the way they track employees hours is so bizarre to me? We have to “clock in” under EACH client for EACH task. If there is a 25 min period where im not really working on a client project i loose those 25 mins from my time sheet. We are on salary yes, BUT we are not paid OT. We bank hours to use against days off.
There was an incident once where my female boss yelled at me and it upset me a-lot. My other boss (her husband) scheduled a meeting to smooth things over (he is a smooth talker, or thinks he is) he proceeds to tell me all my good points says he cares about my happiness but casually slides in comments like “dont take this the wrong way, but we interviewed several people for your position, a-lot of them more qualified than you and asking for leas pay” also tells me i need to be less confident (assuming this is coming from his wife about the times I am trying to explain to her a better solution and she doesn’t listen).
It’s maddening. Im going mad. Please tell me there are better companies out there that this is an extreme situation …. Or i may just hurtle myself into a deep dark hole and never come out.
