Rant: I got fired because my team lead thinks that just doing your work and not being social is a fireable offence

I've joined a new company on 20 of March as senior software developer. First 2 weeks my assigned mentor was not available, then he changed the time zone to opposite of me, but I'm a night owl so I still managed to connect with him at 2 am every work day and be on the daily meeting at 9 AM. I got assigned a task that basically needed in-depth knowledge of the architecture (with 0/zilch/nada documentation and only shrugs from my mentor), but dumb fuck I am I spend weekends and several nights getting familiar and designing a solution … got shut down just to see it committed with minimal changes from my design a few weeks after. I got assigned a task that basically needed in-depth knowledge of the architecture (with 0/zilch/nada documentation and only shrugs from my mentor), but dumb fuck I am I spend weekends and several nights getting familiar and designing a solution … got shut down just to see it committed with minimal changes from my design a few weeks after.

Since then I closed about 20 defects, implemented 2 new features – about twice more work as averaged by my team mates. Yesterday I got my “probation” review and informed that I was unsatisfactory because I behave as a freelancer and not a team member, but since I have demonstrated excellence I would be allowed to extend my probation period another 2 months.

Today I got a hold of my team lead and tried to discuss with him what does “behave as a freelancer and not a team member” actually mean:

– I start my zoom meetings with video off and I use a virtual background.Yes, he is not fucking joking!

– I asked to leave early to many times, and the fact that I needed to get some sleep to be available to connect my mentor at 2AM is irrelevant.

– I never asked anyone else how they are doing or if I can help them with something

– my team mates are slow and being twice as fast as them is not a big deal

– I should go to therapy to learn how to connect to my colleagues

– I should have the same expectations of myself as if I owned the company

Apparently “ah, just go fuck yourself” wasn't the appropriate answer 😀 I got called a hour after to be informed that they won't be extending my probation period.

They tried to pull some bullshit that they won't be paing me and they want me to pay for shipping them the laptop outside the country to the main office, but fortunately I have 20 year old contract/friendship with one of the best law firms in the country, a quick call from them, got me paid till the end of this month.

Stil sucks because I had high hopes on this job, but fuck them!
