Realized why employees NEED to discuss salaries

I've been working as an accounts receivables clerk at my current company for 10 months now. I make like $18/hr. It's not the greatest, but it's accounting data entry, it's chill, so I'm not complaining much since I live with parents. Recently I was asking one of my coworkers whom I'm closer to about job hunting because i got an interview offer for a job that pays $28/hr. I told her it's a $10/hr increase to what I currently make. That was when I found out that she makes $16/hr. That's literally CA minimum wage. Not to mention, she's been at the company for 2.5yrs and does the accounts payable, which has a larger workload compared to mine. This company is a medium sized company. It's not small but not big either. Even then, they're taking advantage of a lot of people here.
