I’ve seen a lot about trying to preserve relationships for future recommendations and/or references.
Fuck those people and fuck those companies.
Most of the time if not all of the time these days, a future employer does a background check just to make sure the dates, position, and company you told them you worked for, are true.
There are services (at least in the US) that do this for background checks. One is called “The Work Number”.
I’ve worked for about 5 very large financial firms based in the US and not one has asked for recommendations or referrals from me. They have all used the credit agencies and these background check companies to use the platforms to verify the employment info.
I believe HR law is that you cannot even ask a candidate if they were fired or quit and they have no ability to verify this. If everyone who ever got fired, had to divulge this, no one would ever get hired. As getting fired is not like having a criminal record.
Occasionally they’ll ask “eligible for rehire?” Meaning secretly, fired or quit? But these platforms and agencies are “not authorized to give out that information.”
So my observation in 2022 for companies is that no recommendations or references are needed, as companies just want to verify you’ve worked at abc company for xyz amount of time at position 123.
Background: I was fired from all 5 of those jobs. When I wanted a new job I wouldn’t resign, I just would get fired on purpose so at least I would have qualified for unemployment pay in case the deal with the new employee fell through last minute.
Remember that no one would give you two weeks notice with firing you, they just enjoy a couple weeks of using you up and fucking with you since they know your existence in their lives is terminal.
