For the record, I'm 30 and have been working a mix of retail, bar, and contractor since I was 16. I'm not lacking exsperice in “entry level” jobs. Not going to reveal the place for obvious reasons.
My job interview was for LAST Thursday at 9am. I show up 10 minutes early and the place isn't open, that's fine. I go back to my car and wait. Every 10 minutes I check the door and it's still locked. 9:00 I text the person who set up the interview when I got there that I had arrived, 9:15 letting him know the doors were locked I was unable to enter the building, and then at 9:40 letting him know I was going home. I mentioned to let me know if he wanted to schedule another interview. I got a text from a different number at 8pm claiming to be the hiring manager apologizing because he wasn't told that he was scheduled an interviewee. He asked if I could come in this (past) Thursday, again at 9am. It honestly took all of me to text back “Will the doors be unlocked?”.
I get there at 9am. The doors are unlocked. The manager greets me. He apologizes again. He can't find my application. He can't find my resume either, so I hand him a copy. He likes that I have open availability and a good work history. This interview goes on for about 45 minutes because he was having a hard time explaining the operations. For example, instead of asking me if I've ever used a POS system/register, he said “If a customer wants something, you just gotta press the button, and then the size comes up and you press the button of the size they want. Its really easy.” This wasn't a boomer, this dude was easily my age.
He starts talking about my availability, and how it's nice that it's flexible because they have a lot of college students working for them and it's inconvenient. I asked how often the schedule goes out, “Every Monday. You find out your shifts for that week every Monday.” I really need a job, so I'm trying to just grin. What he said next made me “nope” out.
“So… We aren't hiring. We hired our last person 3 days ago. I only went ahead with this interview because I felt like I had to. But im going to talk to the GM and see if we can bring you on. If we bring you on, then we can start phasing out some people i was telling you about. The more hours you work here, the faster you climb the ladder!”
This is absolutely horrible right?
